The efforts put into the colts are starting to bear fruit in the senior teams.
The 1st XI under the captaincy of Ash Spencer finished the 2011
season as runners up in
Regional Division 1 of the Hampshire Cricket league.
The 1st XI went for a long period of time
unbeaten before losing a few games at the end of the season to scupper their
chances of winning the league but promotion was the main goal for the team. Led
by Ash Spencer, new players Billy Maisey and Harry Hannam made an impact but the
most satisfying successes were 15 year old Nicky Caddick and 17 year old
Christie Salmon who both opened the bowling. They have both progressed through
the colts’ section and the 2nd XI and worked very hard during the
winter with the club’s bowling coach and it certainly bore fruit for them and
the team.
The main problem for the team was being able to give
everyone a chance in a match as the team regularly surpassed 250 runs for the
loss of only a few wickets.
Club Captain Andy Salmon couldn’t be more delighted.
“Promotion is a good target to have but the continual development of the younger
players and providing the senior players with all levels of cricket of that they
can enjoy the game that is also very important to us.
All our 3 teams are now separated by 1 division and
together with our two Sunday teams and our midweek team, we are able to provide
cricket for players at all levels of ability and to suit the spare time that
they have available. We also now have a perfect structure to develop the young
talent in our colts’ section through into senior cricket.”
Many thanks to all those who have played in 2011.
